A Classroom Application

I got an idea thinking of what to do this summer. We use the IRC for chatting and meeting and conferences. But i got this idea that we can use it for educational purpose to, serving as a permanent server for classroom meet-ups. Freenode supplies free channels at will, so each channel can serve as a classroom. What we do is write a python application that simulates a classroom, where everyone can take seats, ask questions or take notes, all using automated buttons. The python program has a receiver part and a sender part. The sender part sends custom commands to the channel when any button is clicked like – “raise a hand”, or “change the topic”. The receiver part parses these custom commands and responds accordingly. The person who starts the software is the teacher, and holds administrative privileges over the classroom, such as ‘STOP SESSION’ or “HALT SESSION’ or ‘CHANGE TOPIC’.

The only problem that is evident to me is to get the program working through Proxy, so that it can be used behind proxy networks, which are very common in colleges.

Starting to code from today. Haven’t yet decided what to call it. Any suggestions pertaining to name or functionality is welcome.

That’s the problem I mentioned with the proxy. I’ll figure it out. And I’m not aiming the software at the college audience. It is an effort to make e-teaching easier and cheaper. Check out the Bijra High School Project on http://www.dgplug.org. An people do not need to know the term IRC to be able to use this.

By the way, XChat works in our hostel, behind proxy.

XChat is not IRC 😐 I need to connect to specific IRC Channels which i am unable to 😐 Mibbit works but Mibbit is banned by many channels 😐
